PBL Energy research - English - 2024/25
In Grade 8 English the students have been preparing their research for the PBL project this semester, which this year focuses on finding sustainable energy solutions. Mr Ben asked students to prepare presentations to demonstrate the issue they are trying to tackle and then to give their proposed solutions.
Filtration and evaporation - Science - 2024/25
Students performed filtration and evaporation experiments in order to demonstrate how substances in mixtures can be separated. First, the students used a filter funnel and filter paper to separate sand from water. Then, students filled bowls with salt water, and used hot plates to evaporate the water, leaving the salt behind. Lastly, they wrote down their observations in their science notebooks.
Relationship of Parallel Lines and Angles - Math - 2024/25
In Grade 8 math, the first topic students studied was Triangles and the Pythagorean Theorem. To test the students comprehension of the content in a fun way, they played a Blooket in class to recap what was learned about angles and triangles. Students had fun trying to win the game and the winners got a prize.
Character Cards - English - 2024/25
In light of the project's success last year, I decided once more to make character cards our first project of the school year in grade 8 English. This project is a fun, creative way for the students to demonstrate their knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary we have been covering in Unit 1. This project has been as popular as last year, perhaps even more so. The success is due to the project format containing elements of video games and anime which are very popular with the students.
Molecules Lab - Science - 2024/25
Students built models of molecules using clay to represent atoms, and toothpicks to represent chemical bonds. They created a color code to denote the different elements used. Students were required to use a set number of atoms, and to describe the composition of the molecules they built.
