Project-Based Learning at SJC
Project-Based Learning (PBL) is an instructional teaching approach designed to give students the opportunity to learn by actively engaging in real-world and meaningful projects.
How does PBL work?
Student-Led, Teacher Guided
The project theme will create a frame for the students to work within, whilst still giving them creative control. Teachers guide the project timeline during weekly lessons.
Team Work
Students work together in small groups and will be able to develop their own projects based on their individual ideas and interests.
21st Century Skills
During the process of completing a project, students will develop skills such as:
-
flexible knowledge
-
effective problem-solving skills
-
SDL (self directed learning) skills
-
effective collaboration skills
-
intrinsic motivation
Authentic Feedback
Projects are designed to be cross curricula and whilst PBL is driven by the English department, there is regular input and mentorship from the Math and Science departments.
Students are encouraged to gain peer feedback and conduct further research to understand whether their ideas will be successful and if they solve the problem they have identified.
Women in STEM careers.
-
STEM careers are considered to be the jobs of the future
-
Girls are highly underrepresented in STEM careers
-
Thailand’s Ministry of Education recognizes the underrepresentation problem and has partnered with UNESCO to promote STEM education among girls and young women.
-
The purpose of PBL is to further introduce students to studies within STEM fields.
-
Research conducted shows that after completing a PBL project, students had an increased interest in future STEM careers.
