Food Science: Popcorn Lab
Grade 8 Food Science students explored the science behind popcorn through a practical investigation into how different cooking conditions affect popping efficiency. Working in groups, students compared popcorn kernels heated with and without oil, collected data, and analysed their results to determine which method produced the best outcome.
Alongside the experiment, students learned how moisture trapped inside each kernel turns to steam when heated, creating pressure that causes the kernel to burst and expand. The activity developed students' skills in observation, prediction, data collection, and scientific reasoning while connecting everyday foods to real scientific principles.
Science: Evaporation Demonstration
Grade 8 Science students investigated the process of evaporation and explored how heat can cause liquids to change state. Through classroom discussion and practical demonstrations, students examined the role of evaporation in everyday life and its importance within the water cycle.
To deepen their understanding, students conducted an experiment using salt water and heat. As the water gradually evaporated, students observed that the dissolved salt remained behind, demonstrating that only the water changed into water vapour. Through observation, data collection, and analysis, students developed a stronger understanding of changes of state and the movement of matter while strengthening their scientific inquiry and critical-thinking skills.
Food Science: Red Cabbage pH Lab
Grade 8 Food Science students investigated acids and bases using a natural pH indicator made from red cabbage. By testing a range of common household substances, students observed dramatic colour changes and used these reactions to determine whether each substance was acidic, neutral, or alkaline.
The practical activity allowed students to explore chemical properties through direct observation and experimentation. As they recorded results and compared pH values, students developed their scientific investigation skills while gaining a deeper understanding of how pH affects the foods, drinks, and products they encounter in everyday life.
