Grade 9 Hands-on Learning
Science: DNA Lab
Grade 9 Science students have been studying genetics and the structure of DNA. In this practical investigation, students extracted samples of their own DNA using a simple laboratory procedure involving a salt solution, detergent, and ethyl alcohol.
The detergent was used to break down cell membranes, releasing the DNA from the cells, while the alcohol caused the DNA to separate from the solution and become visible as thin, white strands. Students were able to observe their DNA firsthand and examine the results more closely under a microscope. This engaging laboratory activity helped students develop a deeper understanding of cell biology, genetics, and the techniques scientists use to study genetic material.
Maths: Polynomial Bingo
In Grade 9 Mathematics, students took part in a Polynomial Bingo activity designed to reinforce their understanding of algebraic expressions and polynomial operations. Rather than completing a traditional worksheet, students applied their knowledge by solving mathematical problems and matching their answers to spaces on their bingo cards.
The activity combined mathematical practice with a fun and competitive element, encouraging students to think carefully, work efficiently, and check their calculations for accuracy. Through active participation, students strengthened their confidence in working with polynomials while developing problem-solving skills in an engaging classroom environment.
Space Day
Space Day 2024 provided students with an exciting opportunity to explore the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through a range of hands-on activities and interactive workshops. The event brought together students from across Thailand to engage in practical learning experiences inspired by space exploration and scientific discovery.
A highlight of the event was the participation of former NASA astronaut Charles “Sam” Gemar, who shared insights from his experiences in space and inspired students to pursue their interests in STEM subjects. Through workshops, demonstrations, and collaborative activities, students developed their curiosity, problem-solving skills, and understanding of the many possibilities within science and technology.
English: Newspapers
In Grade 9 English, students explored the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles by taking on the role of newspaper journalists. Students selected key events from the story and transformed them into newspaper articles, applying journalistic writing techniques to report on the events as if they had occurred in real life.
The project encouraged students to analyse the plot, characters, and themes of the novel while developing their writing, creativity, and communication skills. By adapting literary events into news reports, students demonstrated their understanding of the text and gained experience writing for a specific audience and purpose.
